My Top 10

This list of my top 10 favorite paper currencies is based on how rare, beautiful and valuable the bills are. Many of them are no longer in circulation for different reasons. Many countries no longer exist and their currencies are left for collectors.


USA (10 Dollar,1907) Gold Certificate Paper Currency, Michael Hillegas (1728– 1804)

Hillegas was a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from 1765 to 1775 and served as treasurer of the Committee of Safety under Benjamin Franklin in 1774. Hillegas was the first Treasurer of the United StatesHe was also an early member of the American Philosophical Society, along with Franklin. He died in Philadelphia and is buried near Franklin. Late in the 19th century, agitation by his descendants resulted in his portrait appearing on the ten dollar gold certificate from 1907 to 1922.


The estimated Value of this bill is $5000.00 in a very good condition.

Sarawak, 10 Cents, 1940

Sarawak, ruled by an English family for 100 years until 1941 when it was occupied by Japan, was a British colony 1946-63, and became part of Malaysia in 1963. 

The estimated Value of this bill is $450.00 in a very good condition.

French Indo-China, 500 Piastres, (1939)

Estimated Value: $1,380
This bill was sold  for $1380 (New condition)  in a live auction in January 2009.

Straits Settlements, 10 Cents, 1919

Straits Settlements, a former British colony, consisted of Malacca, Penang, Singapore, Labuan, Cocos Island and Christmas Island. Cocos Island and Christmas Island were ceded to Australia in 1955 and 1958 respectively. Penang and Malacca became the Federation of Malaya in 1957, and together with Labuan formed Malaysia in 1963. Singapore was made part of Malaysia in 1963-65, and became an independent republic in 1965.
It's estimated value is $ 110.00.


Guadeloupe (20 Francs, 1947)

Guadeloupe, located in the Leeward Islands of the West Indies, is an Overseas Department of France. Guadeloupe notes were used until 1960. French Antilles notes used 1961-75. Since 1975 notes of France are used. Guadeloupe now uses Euro.
This note is very hard to find. 


Katanga, 50 Francs, 1960

Katanga, seceded from the newly independent Republic of the Congo in 1960. It was reintegrated back into the republic in 1962.
The estimated value of this bill is $600.00.

French Guiana (100 Francs,1940)

French Guiana is a French Overseas Department located in the northeast coast of South America. French Guiana notes were used until 1960. French Antilles notes were used from 1961 to 1975. Notes from France are used since 1975. French Guiana now uses Euro. This 100 Franc bill is very hard to find.

France (100 Fances 1959), Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821)

This is a very beautiful currency in my collection. The approximate value of this bill in a very good condition is between $80.00 to $100.00.


Greece (500 Drachmas, 1955), Socrates (469-399 B.C)

The estimated value of this bill is $450.00 in a very good condition.

Italy, (50,000 Lire, 1974), Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Its value is approximately $575.00.
